Erode East or ‘Erode (East)’ is a state assembly constituency in Erode district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Its State Assembly Constituency number is 98. It consists of a portion of Erode taluk which includes Erode City. It is included in Erode Parliamentary Constituency. It is one of the 234 State Legislative Assembly Constituencies in Tamil Nadu, in India.
This constituency was newly formed, in the year of 2008, by dividing the integrated Erode Assembly Constituency.
Boundaries and parts
Erode East covers the central part of Erode City Corporation to the river Kaveri on the east and Modakurichi Constituency limit on the south; a part of the city is also covered by that constituency.
The eastern part of the city, to the eastern banks of the river Kaveri is included in Komarapalayam Constituency.
Demographics
The Kongu Vellalar Gounder & Sengundha Mudhaliyar communities constitute about 45% of the total population of this constituency.
Kongu Vellalar (all sub-divisions) 30%, Senguntha Mudaliyar 15%, Vanniyar 10%, Chettiyar(all kinds) 10% and Muslims 8%.
Kongu Nadar, Arunthathiyars, Pillai, Devendra Kula Vellalars, Paraiyar, Vannar, Navithar, Kuyavar, Kuravar, Agamudaiyar, Vettuva Gounder, Aasari, Brahmin, Udaiyar, Shozhiya Vellalar, other Vellalars are also living in considerable numbers and constitute the remaining 25%.
It is disputed by some people that both Kongu Vellala Gounders and Senguntha Mudhaliyars have around 30% population respectively to constitute 60% together.
Some do also claim that Sengundha Mudhaliyars are more populated than Kongu Vellala Gounders.
Telugu people are around 10% in this constituency.
Scheduled Class people are 13% together. They are Paraiyar, Devendrar and Arunthathiyar.
Christians are around 3%, who are mostly Nadars and Scheduled Class people.
