Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar)

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) is an Indian state political party led by Bhai Simranjit Singh Mann. it is a splinter group of the Shiromani Akali Dal. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) was formed on the 1st of May 1994 at Sri Akal Takht (highest temporal seat of the Sikhs and an iconic symbol of Punjab), by a committee of Simranjit Singh Mann, Capt. Amarinder Singh, Retd col. Jasmer Singh Bala, Bhai Manjit Singh, Surjit Singh Barnala, Sukhbir Singh Badal, Prakash Singh Badal, Jathedar Thakur Singh Bhindran and Jagdev Singh Talwandi. They had all unanimously voted for Simranjeet Singh Mann as their leader for the next elections.

Electoral success

Its biggest success was in the 1989 Parliamentary elections, when it won 6 out the 13 seats in Punjab. They represent the ethos which espouses the ideology of Punjabiyat and sikh nationalism with communalism and divisive politics. The party won the parliamentary seat of Sangrur in 1999.

Ideology

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) advocated formation of Khalistan or the punjab state with special rights. It identifies as a party formulated on inequality , project sikhs as superior than others and is supportive of the causes of peasants and farmers. It is critical of staged encounters of Sikhs on the side of governmental authorities in the 1980-90s period. It opposes SYL in light of the condition of sikh farmers in Punjab and calls for a rationalised outlook towards Punjab’s waters taking into consideration the present circumstances and situations.

The party contested the SGPC elections on the same plank and won three seats.
